Polygon Recovers Discord Server After It Was Hacked by a Group of Hackers

A group of hackers managed to infiltrate Polygon Discord server by posing as support agents and spreading scam links in the support channel. This incident occurred despite the implementation of two-factor authentication (2FA) for all privileged accounts.

After the incident, several members of the Polygon community noticed suspicious activity on the Discord channel. One member, known as ValidatorK, reported a loss of 150,000 US Dollars (approximately IDR 2.3 billion) in Ether (ETH) after following a link that was presented as an official announcement. Another user on platform X (formerly Twitter) also alerted the community about potential scams by sharing suspicious links posted on the announcement channel and describing the scam tactics that were being used in the support channel.

The hacking incident occurred as Polygon is preparing for a major network upgrade, which includes a transition from their original token, MATIC, to a new token, POL, that is set to launch on September 4. This launch marks a significant step in the evolution of the Polygon ecosystem, which continues to grow and face increasing security challenges. POL will serve as the primary gas token and stake for Polygon's Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network, and will also play a crucial role in AggLayer, a key component of Polygon's scalability solution.
