A woman has discovered she has been making a mistake with tampons her whole life – and after confessing to her actions on TikTok, it turns out she’s not alone.
It turns out many people are only just realising tampons should not be flushed down the toilet, sparking a massive debate.
But remember, our home toilets aren’t rubbish bins, and the only things that should be going down there are the three Ps - paper, pee and poo.
Sewers are designed to handle only human waste and toilet paper; anything else, like wet wipes or kitchen roll, can cause blockages.
Toilet paper breaks down in water, but products like tampons do not.
A cosmetic tattooist, from the US, Eda, took to TikTok to share her shock.
She said: “I’ve been flushing my tampons for over 20 years. 20 years.
“I was getting my hair done today and I was telling my hairdresser the house we just bought is on a septic tank and we are converting to a sewage system so one of the things I can’t do on a septic tank is flush my tampon.”
She went on to explain how her hairdresser was left confused, prompting Eda to explain further.
After seeing the hairdresser’s reaction, Eda asked: “What are you supposed to do if you don’t flush them?”
The hair stylist responded with a simple solution: “You put it in the trash, you don’t flush it.”
Eda was left surprised and went on to say she always assumed it was okay to flush sanitary products at places without any specific plumbing system restrictions.
She added: “Everywhere I’ve lived, if there was a toilet, I’ve put a tampon in it.”
Additionally, Eda pondered aloud further and stated: “Why did I not know that you were just not supposed to do that?
“I literally thought that’s where they go. I was never told otherwise. No one had the conversation with me. Am I alone?”
As it turns out, Eda wasn’t the only one who didn’t get the memo about proper disposal methods.
Her video went on to garner thousands of comments with confession after confession.
One user admitted: “Omg. I have ALWAYS flushed tampons.”
Another echoed: “I have always flushed tampons. These comments are crazy to me, I’ve never been told not to.”
A third admitted likewise: “I have ALWAYS flushed tampons. I thought that’s what everyone did?? Honestly… gonna continue to flush them.”

A fourth user chimed in: “I always thought they just meant the plastic applicator can’t be flushed…”
However, some people were utterly taken aback by these revelations.
One posted: “These comments are wild. All these people out here flushing tampons.”
Another person voiced their disappointment and claimed: “Girl I’m so upset with you and everyone flushing tampons. It says not to on the box.”
