Even though the PlayStation Portal is little more than a glorified Remote Play machine, it seems to be selling well. In fact, the sales numbers have been high enough for Sony to be paying "close attention" to the handheld market, as confirmed by industry insider Tom Hendeson who casually mentioned it in an X thread talking about handheld consoles.
This gives credence to an earlier leak by Moore's Law is Dead, who stated Sony is working on a PS Vita successor with custom AMD silicon. However, it doesn't have a launch date, not even a rumoured one, but Sony will likely unveil it once Microsoft's purported Xbox handheld drops sometime in 2026. By then, AMD's Zen 6 and RDNA 5 will have been ready, and we could expect to see them in action alongside a multitude of consoles from Asus, MSI and others.
Given the PlayStation Portal's success, one can reasonably assume Sony will launch another variant, likely with an high-refersh-rate OLED screen before it dabbles with a handheld that can play games natively because that is pretty much the only upgradable component on the handheld. It will pair well with a PlayStation 5 Pro that might or might not launch later this year and maybe even play games 4K 120 FPS.
