Edappadi K Palaniswami Slams K Annamalai Over MGR Commemorative Coin Release, Accuses BJP of Being 'Double Faced'

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday slammed state BJP chief K Annamalai over his comments on the release of a commemorative coin of former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran in 2019 by the then AIADMK government.

Palaniswami accused the BJP of being "double faced".

Palaniswami said the AIADMK released the memorial coin themselves and didn’t call any Union Minister, unlike the DMK, and alleged that there was a secret relationship between Chief Minister MK Stalin's party and the BJP.

The former Chief Minister's remarks came amid a row over DMK inviting Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the unveiling of a commemorative Rs 100 coin for MK Karunanaidhi's birth centenary on August 18.

Hitting out at the BJP, Palaniswami said during MGR's commemorative coin release, there was no alliance between AIADMK and BJP. He claimed Palaniswami had no idea about politics.

"You claimed AIADMK rule was riddled with corruption. So you didn’t know all this when you were in alliance with us? You formed an alliance with us in 2021 and lost in your hometown constituency. When in alliance, you needed AIADMK to pass several laws in the Parliament and that AIADMK was good. Now that we have parted ways, AIADMK looks bad. This is BJP's double face," he claimed.

AIADMK had partnered with the BJP during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and 2021 Assembly elections as allies. In September last year, the AIADMK pulled out of alliance with BJP after Annamalai's remarks on Dravidian icon CN Annadurai.

The AIADMK has ruled out any alliance with the BJP for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

"Without knowing anything, he (Annamalai) is acting. For me to become a Chief Minister or the General Secretary of the party, I had to work for 52 years. I faced so many issues throughout the way," Palaniswami said.

Sharpening his attack on Annamalai, the former Chief Minister said, "His only investment is his tongue. I'm not joking. What has he done for Tamil Nadu after becoming the state president of BJP? What funds did he bring for the state? Even during floods, he couldn’t get any funds. What did he do for Tamil Nadu? His aim is to make himself prominent."

Reacting to MGR's image used in the party anthem video of actor Thalapathy Vijay for his new party, Palaniswami said that he was proud of it.

When asked whether AIADMK will form an alliance with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), he said that it will be decided during elections.
