The Perth Mint has added another coin to its Masterpieces collection and it's an absolute beauty. Only eight of these have been made and they'll set you back a whopping $269,000
The Perth Mint has released a new coin as part of its Masterpieces Jewelled Series, and it features a turtle adorned with 113 rare Argyle Pink Diamonds. Only eight of these coins have been made, and they're available for purchase at a hefty price of $269,000.
Despite its high purchasing price, the coin's legal tender value is less than a tenth of that, at $2,500. This disparity in value highlights the collectible nature of the coin, as opposed to its practical use as currency.
If you ever decide to sell a coin like this, it's important to note that banks will only pay the legal tender value, which might not be a great return on your investment.
For instance, a shopper recently visited a Melbourne jeweller with a specially made $200 coin from 1983 and received over $1,000 in credit.
When asked about the discrepancy, Micheli Jewellery owner Darren Harris told Yahoo Finance that if you were to take the coin to a bank, they would give you $200 because that's the legal tender value.
"But we pay the value of the coin, and those coins have probably gone up at least 30 per cent in the last five to six months because gold's gone up so much," he said.
The customer ended up getting more than $1,100 in credit at the jeweller.
This Masterpiece coin, being adorned with jewels, could fetch a higher price than $269,000 if you hold onto it long enough.
