At the Opening Night Live of gamescom 2024, the eagerly awaited fourth installment of the Borderlands series was officially announced. However, the teaser trailer, which recorded over one million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours, reveals little.
The teaser trailer does without any appearances by familiar characters or voices from previous parts. Instead, it begins with the appearance of a phoenix symbol, followed by the depiction of a planet. According to the trailer description on YouTube, this is not supposed to be Pandora - the setting of the previous games. As the game progresses, a rift opens up in space, from which shards rain down on the planet. One of these shards is picked up by a robotic hand and turns out to be the iconic Borderlands Psychomask.
The official description in the trailer reveals that players will take on the role of a legendary vault hunter to fight their way through hordes of enemies on a new planet and loot treasures in the process. A vague release date of 2025 is also mentioned.
Not only in the YouTube comments, but also in the Reddit community the anticipation is palpable. After the spin-offs "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" and "New Tales from the Borderlands", which were disappointing for many players, skepticism still prevails. Even Borderlands 3, released in 2019, which only received a user score of 5.6 on Metacritic, was unable to reach the level of its predecessor. Although the game was technically well implemented, many players felt that the plot was too weak. Borderlands 2 is considered the highlight of the series with a user score of 8.2. A YouTube comment sums up the hopes of many fans:
"Take borderlands 3’s gun play, put the story writing on par with borderlands 2 and you will have the greatest borderlands game ever."
