The Google Workspace team keeps pushing AI-powered features to customers, and hopefully, those who use the free Gmail service will also gain access to these goodies at some point in the future. For now, there are two new updates to Gemini in Gmail that are only available to Workspaces customers.
These updates come after the recent launch of Gemini in the side panel of Gmail, which took place in late June, and, for some customers, it took until July for the changes to become available. Back then, the features available to Gmail users were to summarize email threads, get suggestions for responses, get help drafting emails, and ask questions regarding the information contained in the inbox or Google Drive files. Now, the time has come for Gmail to refine drafts with the help of AI.
According to the Workspaces team, the new option for Help me write does what its name suggests, specifically polishes email drafts. The Polish option works on mobile devices (iOS and Android), as well as on the web. Additionally, both Android and iOS devices get shortcuts to Help me write and Refine my draft.
Previously, those looking to refine their emails had three options at their disposal, namely Shorten, Elaborate, and Formalize. The Polish option can take rough notes and turn them into a formal draft, ready to be sent out. To get all these options in a menu, the user simply needs to swipe right on Refine my draft. For both admins and end users, the Polish option is enabled by default. While there is no admin control for it yet, it cannot be disabled by the user either.
The option is already available for all customers who qualify, without any rollout time involved. As usual with these features, the update is available to Google Workspace customers with Google One AI Premium, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, as well as Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on.
