Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Poland on Sunday, making history as the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in over 45 years. During his visit, PM Modi paid homage to three memorials that symbolize the deep historical connections between Poland and India.

The first memorial PM Modi visited was Good Maharaja Square, which is dedicated to Maharaja Jam Sahib Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji of Nawanagar, Gujarat. During World War II, the Maharaja played a heroic role in rescuing and sheltering 1,000 Polish children who had been orphaned and displaced by the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. These children were brought to India and cared for by the Maharaja at his summer palace in Balachadi, near Jamnagar.

The second memorial PM Modi visited was the Monte Cassino Memorial, which commemorates the victory of the soldiers of the Second Polish Corps at the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II in 1944. The Second Polish Corps played a crucial role in the Allied victory in Italy, and their conquest of the hilltop monastery of Monte Cassino was a turning point in the battle. More than 900 Polish soldiers were killed in this battle.

The third memorial PM Modi visited was the Kolhapur Memorial, which is located adjacent to the Monte Cassino Memorial and has been set up in memory of the village in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, that hosted the Polish children rescued by the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar. The children were moved to Valivade in Kolhapur in 1945, where they stayed for the duration of the war.

PM Modi's visit to these memorials and his recognition of the historical connections between Poland and India serve to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
