Pindrop unveils Pulse Inspect software to detect AI-deepfake voice clones to help stop fraud and disinformation

Pindrop has unveiled the Pulse Inspect software to detect AI-deepfake voice clones to help stop fraud and disinformation. The software uses patented technologies to reliably detect over 90% of AI-generated voices even with audio samples under ten seconds in length.

AI-cloned voices have become so convincingly real that millions have been lost to fraud. Earlier this year, thieves stole $25 million from a finance worker at a Hong Kong multinational by using a deepfake video call that used deepfake voices of the CFO and other staff members. Deepfake political videos have been used to influence the outcome of elections, including the upcoming 2024 US election. Fake voice calls from politicians have also been created and used, igniting much uproar.

Pindrop has been researching the matter for eight years and holds 25 patents on audio deepfake detection. Their latest Pulse Inspect AI has been trained on over 20 million real and fake voice samples. Fake voice samples from over 370 different cloning tools enable high detection rates. The AI breaks up voice samples into four-second clips for analysis, utilizing the unique audio characteristics of various deepfake algorithms and additional audio characteristics of real voices to identify fakes. This enables Pulse Inspect to detect fakes 90% of the time when faced with cloned voices from never-before-encountered deepfake tools and 99% of the time when faced with voices from previously-seen tools.

Businesses should know that fraud detection software is never perfect. A recent NPR test of Pulse Inspect found that the software did not correctly categorize real versus fake voices in 3 out of 84 tested samples. The 3.6% failure rate leaves a small chance for attackers to succeed, and businesses should always use defense in depth to protect their assets.

Readers who worry about their assets and their loved ones should secure their accounts using two-factor methods, such as text-messaged access codes or a physical two-factor key (like this one on Amazon), and make sure family members use a secret word or phrase to verify their identities during suspicious calls.
