Home security giant ADT confirms data breach

ADT, a leading home security company responsible for integrating alarms, security cameras and other solutions for over six million users in the US, was recently hacked by unknown threat actors.

The company has admitted it suffered a data breach in arecent regulatory filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The report reads that the hackers were privy to information from ADT’s customer order database including full names, email addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses. ADT also emphasized that it has “no reason to believe” the home security systems or sensitive bank information of its customers was compromised.

BleepingComputerreports that the purported threat actors claim to have gained access to over 30,800 customer records, leaking a sample on a public cybercrime forum on July 31st. In the SEC filing, ADT refers to this as a “small percentage” of its overall user basewhich is “not reasonably likely” to affect its financial prospects. ADT currently hasan annual revenue of $4.98 billion.

While ADT mentions that it is collaborating with cybersecurity experts to investigate this affair, it also includes a disclaimer that its statements in the SEC filing are subject to uncertainties posed by the hack.

This is by no means ADT's first rodeo, however. The company faced similar hacks in the past, including one in 2021 by its own staff which severely compromised videofeed from the security cameras of customers homes. Unlike that incident, there is no indication of that sort of data leakage this time. Nevertheless, ADT affirms that it has notified the affected customers of the situation.
