Canto Blockchain Suffers Two-Day Outage Amid Consensus Issue

Layer-1 blockchain Canto suffered a two-day outage over a "consensus issue," halting on-chain activity. A fix will be deployed on Monday.

Layer-1 blockchain Canto has been hit by a two-day outage after a “consensus issue” halted on-chain activity.

The network went down on Saturday, with three transactions being processed on Aug. 10, according to Etherscan data. No activity has taken place since then.

“Canto chain is currently experiencing an issue with consensus that has caused the chain to halt,” the Canto team said in an announcement on X. “An upgrade to address this issue will be carried out on Monday, August 12 UTC 12:00. All funds are safe. Once the chain resumes, users will be able to access all activities as usual.”

The network will be paused at block 1,419,096, according to the announcement. The team said it will announce the chain resumption and provide further updates.

Canto, a fork of the modular blockchain Celestia, experienced a period of explosive growth after going live in August last year. Total value locked (TVL) surged to more than $200 million in March as investors flocked to a series of decentralized finance (DeFi) services like lending, staking and liquidity provision.

However, on-chain activity has rapidly subsided since then, with TVL dropping to just $13.7 million, according to data from DefiLlama. The CANTO token is also down by 83% since May 24.

The recent outage comes amid a broader slowdown in the crypto market, with prices and trading volumes declining sharply from the highs of 2021. Several DeFi protocols have also been hit by technical issues and governance disputes in recent months.
