Forerunner 265: Garmin releases curious new update for mid-range smartwatch with over a dozen alleged changes

The Forerunner 265 (curr. $449.99 on Amazon) is starting to new updates at a steady pace again, albeit primarily on Garmin's Beta Program. To recap, the company delivered Beta Version 20.15 at the back end of July with various new features, bug fixes and improvements from Software Version 19.18.

Now, it has begun rolling out Beta Version 20.21, which it claims has reached roughly 20% of Forerunner 265 smartwatches enrolled on its Beta Program. For reference, Garmin has created a dedicated support article for managing Beta Program participation, including how to leave if necessary. As for Beta Version 20.21, Garmin states that it has made the following changes:

  • Added Device Settings Backup and Restore.
  • Adds Garmin Share, share your workouts, courses, and waypoints between compatible Garmin devices.
  • Fixed alert suppression during breathwork activity.
  • Fixed calendar display issues.
  • Fixed edge case weather data display errors.
  • Fixed lock screen vibration during sleep mode.
  • Fixed map data field text truncation.
  • Fixed pool size selection in Garmin Connect real time settings.
  • Fixed various bugs and UI improvements.
  • Fixed various language translation errors.
  • Improvements to race time predictions based on fitness level and recent efforts.
  • Improvements to support pool swim workouts with pace alerts and critical swim speed.
  • Improvements to the pool swim rest screen and alert tones.
  • Integrates the Garmin Run Coach feature into Garmin Connect app.

As some Beta Program participants have noticed, Beta Version 20.21 contains the same changelog as last month's build. Unfortunately, Garmin has not shared any other details in this regard. However, we imagine that it may have something to do with undocumented bugs, which appeared to affect an equivalent build for the Forerunner 965.
