According to news on August 2, market research organization TechInsights today released a global smartphone shipment report for the second quarter of 2024. The data showed that global smartphone shipments rebounded 7.6% year-on-year in the quarter, reaching 289.6 million units.

Samsung tops the global smartphone market with nearly 19% market share, and Apple ranks second with 15% market share. Xiaomi, vivo and Transsion rounded out the top five, followed by OPPO (OnePlus), Honor, Lenovo-Motorola, realme and Huawei. Among the top ten vendors, all except OPPO (OnePlus) achieved positive year-on-year growth rates.
The agency stated that this is the third consecutive quarter that global smartphone shipments have maintained a recovery trend, mainly driven by surging demand in emerging markets. Africa and the Middle East, Central and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and Asia and the Pacific all posted solid results and largely led the recovery. Although the North American and Western European markets continue to decline, the rate of decline has improved significantly compared with previous quarters.
The performance of the top ten suppliers in the quarter is summarized as follows:
Samsung’s global smartphone shipments reached 53.8 million units, occupying nearly 19% of the market share, down from 20% in the same period last year. While the company's smartphone shipments grew at just 1% annually, the lowest among all top 10 vendors [with the exception of OPPO (OnePlus)], Samsung managed to end its seven-quarter slump. This growth mainly comes from the three regions of Africa and the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe and Central and Latin America, with performance in mature markets and India still mixed.
Apple iPhone global shipments this quarter were 44.7 million units, a year-on-year increase of 4%. It held 15% of the market, down one percentage point from 16% a year earlier. All other regions posted annual growth rates except China (down 8% year-on-year) and Central and Eastern Europe (down 9% year-on-year). This quarter, the downward trend in the Chinese market has eased. Apple's iPhone shipments in China fell 8% year-on-year, an improvement from the 19% decline in the first quarter of 2024.
Xiaomi continues to rank third, with global smartphone shipments of 42.3 million in the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 27%, and a 15% market share. It is worth noting that this Chinese manufacturer has maintained growth for four consecutive quarters. Strong growth in China, India, Southeast Asia, Central Latin America and Africa and the Middle East largely offset mixed results in the Western Europe region. In India, Xiaomi ranks second (behind Vivo), but its market share increased to 19% in the quarter, up from 16% a year ago. In China, Xiaomi achieved double-digit growth and increased its annual market share to join the top five.
vivo shipped 25.8 million units globally during the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 20%, and rose to fourth place with a market share of 9%. Vivo topped the Asia-Pacific region with a 16% market share during the quarter. For the first time in the region, vivo topped the charts in both China and India. In addition to China and India, vivo has also achieved strong growth in multiple emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Thailand and Bangladesh.
Transsion Group (including Tecno, Infinix and itel) ranked fifth. The three brands combined shipped 25.5 million smartphones globally in the second quarter of 2024, up 3% year-on-year, with a market share of nearly 9%, the same as last year. Tecno and Infinix hold the majority of the market share, while itel brands focus on the cheaper feature phone market. With competition intensifying in India and other low-end 4G and 5G emerging markets, mainly from brands like Vivo, Xiaomi, Lenovo-Motorola and Realme, the company faces a tough journey ahead.
OPPO (including OnePlus) fell to sixth place, with shipments falling 8% year-on-year. The Chinese brand has maintained its annual decline trend for the past eleven consecutive quarters. Its market share was 9%, down from 10% a year ago. The OPPO brand experienced an annual decline of 5%, while the OnePlus brand experienced an annual decline of 22%. Weak demand in North America (OnePlus brand) and Western European markets, as well as increasing competition in the Asia-Pacific region, were the main reasons for the decline. It also saw annual declines in both India and China during the quarter.
Honor’s strong recovery this quarter has slowed down, ranking seventh with a market share of 5%, a slight improvement compared to a year ago. More than 60% of sales this quarter came from the Chinese market. Honor continues to make headway in Western Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. However, in the Chinese market, Honor's market share fell to 15% in the second quarter of 2024, down from 17% a year ago. This quarter, Honor ranked fourth in the Chinese market, behind vivo, OPPO (including OnePlus) and Huawei.
Lenovo-Motorola maintained its eighth position in Q2 2024 with a market share of 5%. Shipments increased 28% year over year, with solid growth in all regions except Central and Latin America. In North America, Lenovo-Motorola solidified its third-place position with annual market share growth of 14%, the highest share in its history in the second quarter, thanks to its updated G and Edge product lines.
realme climbed to ninth place, with a market share of over 4% in the quarter. Realme achieved 13% annual growth in Q2 2024, primarily from Europe, Latin America and Africa Middle East. It maintained its top five position in the Central and Eastern Europe and Africa Middle East regions.
