Despite a severe market downturn, the world keeps turning, the show must go on, and I must still attend the Asian Blockchain Summit (ABS).
Despite a severe market downturn, the world keeps turning, and I must still attend the Asian Blockchain Summit (ABS). It’s been quite interesting so far.
Crypto Market Turmoil Doesn’t Extinguish Enthusiasm at ABS
As I flew to Taipei to attend the Asia Blockchain Summit (ABS), traditional markets and the crypto market crashed hard. I cursed the fact that I was helpless to react, and wondered what the atmosphere would be like at the conference as the sky was falling.
The mood among attendees I spoke with was upbeat, despite the recent roil in markets. However, any mention of the price almost universally elicited nervous laughter, suggesting that the atmosphere was a bit muted compared to what it might have been if prices were flat or even modestly down.
In any case, here are my initial thoughts from walking the conference floor on Day One. Over the next two days, I’ll be sitting down to talk with projects in the following categories and more.
TON Makes a Big Splash
At the two other conferences I attended in Japan this summer, TON and TON ecosystem projects didn’t have a large presence, or at least not one that was discernible to me. This seemed odd since TON has been an exciting topic among attendees. Well, TON is in full effect at ABS, with a gigantic video-screened monument emblazoned with TON signage. TON-related projects occupy prime booth locations with sprawling footprints.
Gaming
Web3 gaming continues to be a prominent feature at these events. IVS Kyoto featured a Web3 gaming section, and ABS’s is even larger. There are MOBAs, card games, FPSs, and more. Dedicated blockchains, game projects with ties to Bitcoin, and a Web3 eSports platform are all present. Preliminary chats with various gaming projects indicate that these projects are taking a more practical approach to their Web3 integration. Namely, gamers shouldn’t be forced to contend with Web3 elements (wallets, transactions, etc.) if they don’t want to.
RWAs
Real World Asset (RWA) projects are represented on the conference floor and among attendees. The RWA platforms are wrapping more than just sovereign bonds; art and commodities with regulatory compliance are also featured.
Overall, the conference was buzzing with energy and innovation, and I look forward to diving deeper into these topics in the coming days.
