Tesla Model Y Juniper facelift appears without camo in a surprise design twist

Two hasty snapshots of what is claimed to be the upcoming 2025 Tesla Model Y Juniper facelift have appeared, showing some surprise design decisions.

If these turn out credible in the end, the Model Y Juniper refresh may not be just an SUV version of the current Model 3 Highland facelift, contrary to initial rumors.

While an alleged Juniper unit was spotted not long ago covered in test mule camouflage, someone has lifted it in the new pictures to show what is underneath. There is apparently a brand-new design element across the rear that resembles a light bar.

It remains to be seen whether that will stay for the final retail version, but it raises the prospects for a more significant Model Y Juniper design overhaul than previously thought. A lot of industry insiders, including Rivian's CEO the other day, complain that Tesla's designs are getting a bit long in the tooth and shouldn't be copied.

Tesla may have heard these reactions and decided to do something different for the 2025 Model Y Juniper facelift, as the snapshot of its alleged interior also showcases a new design with ambient lighting.

The Tesla Model Y Juniper is now expected to be announced and released in 2025, after Elon Musk put the kibosh on rumors that it is coming this year. The Model Y already got a mild refresh in China, complete with ambient lighting, soft interior, and new wheels. Tesla also keeps doing other upgrades, like installing the FSD Hardware 4.0 suite in new batches as soon as it became available.

The Model Y is Tesla's bestselling vehicle, and it wouldn't want to cannibalize existing sales too soon while waiting on suppliers to ramp the 4680 battery production. Currently, all 4680 battery packs go to the Cybertruck ramp, but Tesla just showed the first unit built with dry-cathode cells.

This method will greatly reduce the price of the 4680 batteries coming from Giga Texas, so that both the Cybertruck and the upcoming 2025 Model Y Juniper refresh might benefit.

When Panasonic and LG start delivering their own 4680 cells to Tesla, there should be enough to go around for both the Cybertruck and the Model Y, too.
