Breaking: University of Wyoming to Launch Bitcoin Research Institute
The University of Wyoming is set to open the UW Bitcoin Research Institute in August, aiming to deliver “high-quality peer-reviewed” studies on Bitcoin.
Bradley Rettler, a Bitcoin advocate and Associate Professor at the university, announced the new institute on Fox Business on July 28 and will be its director.
Rettler highlighted the goal of the institute to produce rigorous research that will help educate the public about Bitcoin and counter the current landscape of “poor” Bitcoin research.
He pointed to a 2018 study led by University of Hawaii Professor Camilo Mora, which claimed Bitcoin emissions could raise global warming by 3.6° Fahrenheit (2 Degrees Celsius) by 2048. However, the study failed to consider the difficulty adjustment and the block size cap, which led to the misinformation entering journalism and policy.
Andrew M. Rettler, lead author of “Resistance Money: A Philosophical Case for Bitcoin,” is among the professors at the institute, with Rettler also having contributed to the book.
The Bitcoin Research Institute will launch in August with the Fall semester, offering annual summer workshops, academic prizes, and weekly seminars.
As a nonprofit, the institute is permitted to accept Bitcoin donations to support its research. Rettler mentioned that 4% of their investments are in Bitcoin, and any donated Bitcoin will be held and not sold.
Wyoming has been at the forefront of Bitcoin adoption in the United States, largely due to the efforts of pro-Bitcoin Senator Cynthia Lummis and Caitlin Long, the CEO of Custodia Bank, which offers Bitcoin custody solutions.
At the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville on July 27, Lummis announced a strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill, proposing that the US purchase 5% of the total 21 million Bitcoin supply to help reduce the national debt.
In February 2023, Wyoming lawmakers passed a bill to protect individuals from being compelled by state courts to disclose their digital asset private keys and established a legal framework for decentralized autonomous organizations.
