Ford F-150 Tremor overheats twice as Tesla Cybertruck prevails in 10,500-lb towing test under brutal conditions

Much has been said and written about the towing prowess of the controversial Tesla Cybertruck, which has been on the market for almost exactly eight months now. Since then, many EV critics have pointed out the fairly significant range reduction when towing, which isn't that much of a problem in a gasoline-powered pickup truck such as the Ford F-150.

Nevertheless, a new Cybertruck video published by the popular YouTube channel The Fast Lane Truck illustrates that the Tesla Cybertruck is a better vehicle for towing than the Ford F-150 Tremor, at least under certain circumstances. To be more exact, the crew towed a skid-steer loader on a 14ft trailer, which weighed a total of 10,500 lbs and practically matched the maximum towing capacity of both the Cybertruck as well as the F-150.

Even more importantly, the intriguing Cybertruck test was conducted on a hot 90-degree summer day in Colorado as both vehicles had to climb 3,000 ft of elevation over 8 miles in addition to the already high base altitude of 5,000 ft. More or less surprisingly, the 3.5L Ecoboost engine inside the Ford F-150 quickly reached concerning temperatures as the restricted airflow at slow speeds spelled trouble for the best-selling truck in North America, whose Tremor trim is priced similarly to the Cybertruck.

The Ford F-150 Tremor overheated twice and slowed down as the engine coolant hit 250 degrees Fahrenheit, but the truck eventually made it up the hill. The dual-motor version of the Tesla Cybertruck, on the other hand, did not seem to have any issues with the treacherous conditions.

Although Tesla's infotainment system in the Cybertruck does not provide detailed information regarding its operating temperatures, no warning messages popped up as the heavy EV completed the towing test while consuming over 3,000Wh per mile and about 20% of its battery charge on the brutal uphill section.

All in all, the Tesla Cybertruck might not be an ideal long-haul vehicle, but TFL's watch-worthy towing test also shows that an electric truck can indeed provide a better towing experience than the Ford F-150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost, albeit under relatively special circumstances.
