Futurama Recap, 'The One Amigo”

The premiere of Futurama Season 12 sees the Planet Express crew working alongside their kids as Bender Bending Rodriguez (John DiMaggio) connects with his roots. The episode is titled “The One Amigo” and was written by Eric Horsted and directed by Andrew Han. The opening gag is titled “Your TV Friend.”

Futurama Recap, “The One Amigo”

In the PlanEx break room, Philip J. Fry (Billy West), Cubert Farnsworth (Kath Soucie), Dwight Conrad (Phil LaMarr), Axl Wong-Kroker (Maurice LaMarche) and Mandy Wong-Kroker (Lauren Tom) surround the coffee table as they make crude crayon drawings. Amy Wong-Kroker (Tom), who is holding Newt Wong-Kroker (Tom), approaches and admires their artistry.

But Mandy insists this isn’t “kid stuff.” They’re making NFTs. Turanga Leela (Katey Sagal), Hubert Farnsworth (West), Hermes Conrad (LaMarr) and Bender enter the breakroom. Leela equates NFTs with digital art. Cubert scoffs at this, though he admits in this case, the NFTs they’re making are indeed digital art. Axl explains that NFT stands for “non-fungible token,” meaning it’s unique.

Amy asks if she owns the image if she buys an NFT. Axl says no. Amy asks if she owns the original. Axl and Mandy burn their unicorn drawing to demonstrate that this is undesirable. Farnsworth asks what you actually own when you buy an NFT. Cubert says, “A concept. In the form of a digital token stored on the blockchain.” The PlanEx crews’ eyes immediately glaze over. But in spite of their disinterest, the “Horsie” NFT has sold for three bucks. Bender leaps to attention. Axl states top NFTs sell for millions, using the “Apathetic Fish Society” to demonstrate. Leela observes they look “kind of cool, yet also, extremely stupid.” Hearing “cool yet stupid,” Bender is ready to become the next smash hit NFT.

The Bender NFT Collection

A photoshoot montage shows Bender in various outfits (freeze frame for classics like The Gender Bender, Wedding Dress Coilette, Bender-1, Titanius Anglesmith and others). Soon, assisted by the kids, Bender’s NFT collection is online. Dwight and Axl seed sales by making a couple of purchases from themselves. Realizing the whole NFT thing is crooked, Bender rejoices. Soon the Bender NFTs are selling like hotcakes. Bender makes $94.

Soon, Bender and the kids are walking the streets of New New York and enjoying ice cream (which Bender made them pay for). But they soon realize The Museum of Modern Art (MoDA) bought all of Bender’s NFTs for an exhibit called, “The Many Faces of This Guy.” Inside, Ben Beeler (David Herman) shows off the Apathetic Fish Society to a tour that includes Mrs. Astor, Billionairebot and Judge Whitey.

The tour arrives at the Bender Collection. Bender declares this to be “his,” stating it represents the essence of Bender. But Beeler refutes this. He says the concept now resides in the NFT owned by MoDA. He pushes Bender away.

Back at the PlanEx building, Bender mourns. Hermes asks if he can’t just “hack in” and get his NFT back. Dwight says that only happens in stupid TV shows. Hermes says it kind of looks like they’re in a stupid TV show. Cubert says the only way to “hack in” would be to factor a million-digit number. Bender admits he can’t even factor six. To comfort Bender, Fry reads to him from his handwritten autobiography, I’m Bender, Dammit! by Bender. Bender declares he’s off to rediscover himself in the land of his ancestors, making Fry read the location’s name out of the book again: Mexxxico.

Home, Inexplicably, of the Caesar Salad

A drill train knocks aside a tortoise as it arrives in Mexico. Perhaps the tortoise’s presence in his homeland explains why Bender felt such an affinity for the animals in “Crimes of the Hot.” The passengers disembark from the train. Bender immediately meets a robot very similar to himself (Danny Trejo). Soon they’re enjoying drinks together. Bender wonders if they’re from the same factory. The robot agrees to take him to his village.

At the Pueblo de Nanotecas, many robots engage in long-standing traditions. They see some children playing “hoop,” their “ancient national sport.” This involves throwing a big rock at a hoop. Next, they arrive at Casa Rodriguez. Bender states his full name. The other robot introduces himself as Doblando Rodriguez, Bender
