Securing its position as Europe’s emerging crypto capital, the city of Lugano in the Ticino region of southern Switzerland has seamlessly integrated the Polygon Proof-of-Stake (PoS) protocol into its crypto-friendly payment app MyLugano. A major move for its status as the emerging crypto capital of Europe.

In a blog post on November 22, Polygon announced the successful integration of its PoS protocol into the MyLugano payment application, enabling Lugano residents to transact seamlessly within the broader Polygon ecosystem.

According to the announcement, the updated version of MyLugano launches a cutting-edge multi-chain digital wallet for personal custody. The press release indicates that multiple tokens have been integrated into the application section, with plans to include more in the future.

Lugano has become a global leader in cryptocurrency adoption, with MyLugano being developed in partnership with cryptocurrency company Tether and serving a large user base of 30,000 people (nearly half of the city’s population). This user-friendly app facilitates local small and medium-sized traders to make payments in digital currencies.

Winner of the prestigious IEEE Smart City Award, the MyLugano app has enabled over 30,000 users to access a loyalty loop via the city’s proprietary stablecoin, LVGA. The integration of Polygon PoS not only enhances MyLugano’s capabilities as a native payment tool, but also opens the door for users to explore the myriad of decentralized applications within the Polygon network.

In a bid to further expand its digital footprint, the city of Lugano’s crypto-friendly payments app MyLugano will launch a new series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) dedicated to Yuri Catania, according to a latest announcement Artwork by Yuri Catania.

According to Polygon’s blog, the NFT series is called LVGA/XY Flowers and is a tribute to the collaboration between MyLugano and Lugano Living Lab. This innovative collection was inspired by a 40-meter-long, 8-meter-high art installation on the walls of the Palace of Congress. Remarkably, hundreds of people actively participated in the creation of this masterpiece.

Using stick-on technology, the physical artwork is intentionally designed to fade away. More than 2,000 paper flowers are intricately affixed to the walls, destined to become real blooms when they are transplanted to the newly designated green space. However, the essence of this unique art project is not limited to the physical realm.

MyLugano has taken proactive steps to ensure that the LVGA/XY Flowers project continues to exist in the digital space as well. The artwork will be tagged as an NFT on the Polygon network, with each piece signed by artist Yuri Catania. These NFTs will be distributed to all those who actively contributed to the creation of the original physical installation, providing a lasting digital representation of their participation in this unique artistic event.

The City of Lugano has ambitious plans to transform itself into the European capital. As part of this vision, citizens and companies will be able to utilize Bitcoin, Tether and LVGA to pay for a variety of services including annual taxes, parking tickets, public services and student tuition fees. The move paves the way for cryptocurrencies to become legal tender in the city, with PoS facilitating key transactions.

Lugano has made significant progress over the past few years in realizing its site-centric vision. The city launched a digital wallet and LVGA points-based loyalty program to provide residents with a seamless and rewarding experience when using digital assets. Additionally, Lugano launched 3Achain, an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible proof-of-authority consensus mechanism that leverages intricate links to the Ethereum network.

As a network provider of tens of thousands of decentralized applications (DApps) with $5 billion in security, Polygon has been a key partner of Lugano since at least 2022. Polygon began as the infrastructure partner for the city’s stablecoin LVGA and continues to provide cutting-edge rail solutions to support Lugano’s crypto endeavors.
