The 2024 Paris Olympics are almost upon us, with the iconic games set to kick off on July 26.
Often when huge sporting events take place, there's memorabilia for fans to begin collecting. Back when the UK hosted the London 2012 Games, there was a coin collection which was released into circulation. To commemorate the occasion, 29 uniquely embellished coins were brought out.
Now one TikTok user revealed how a certain coin from the collection is actually worth 500 times its face value. User @CoinCollectingWizard is known for his rare coin discoveries where he boasts 168,800 followers on the platform. In the recent video, he turned his attention to the Athletics 50p coin.
He said: "If you are lucky enough to have this 50p then it is now worth £200. Collectors are keen to get their hands on this piece of history. The rare coin features an athlete in the London Olympics as drawn and depicted by the young viewer back in 2009.
"But it wouldn't be until 2011 that the coin was officially minted and distributed to public hands. Around 2.2million of the coins were minted in 2011 and released into circulation. But an earlier version of the coin was minted in 2009 and is much more valuable to collectors."
The user claimed it helps when the coin comes in its original packaging which includes images of the Blue Peter presenters. Recently one of these coins sold for £257 on eBay, which is 500 times more than face value. He concluded: "This is a sought after coin among collectors, good luck finding this very special 50p."
Since the post was shared, it garnered hundreds of likes and a number of comments. One admitted: "I have one of these," while another added: "Great video." And a third chimed in: "I wonder if the coin designer has one."
