A rare Kew Gardens 50p coin has sold for thousands at auction - and it's not the first time.
The ultra rare coin, in gold proof condition, was sold for a whopping £7,000 at auction. But a circulating version of the coin could still fetch you £150.
TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard shared the news in a recent video. He said: "Have you seen this? This beauty of a coin sold for £7,000. The ultra rare version of the Kew Gardens 50p was estimated to fetch between £5,000 and £6,000. The winning bidder grabbed themselves this graded PF70 version which is the best grade a coin can have."
He said there were just 629 gold proof versions of the Kew Gardens 50p coin, which was bought by the public in 2009. "This coin was first released in 2009 to celebrate 250 years of the iconic west London landmark," the TikTok user said. "And it has since became the 'holy grail' of UK coin hunting."
The coin was designed by Christopher Le Brun and features the Chinese pagoda at Kew Gardens. It was voted the nation's favourite 50p design in 2017.
A normal circulating version of the coin sold for £150, reports the Mirror - and could go for more in uncirculated condition. A similar auction five years ago saw the gold proof sell for £2,000 meaning it has shot up in value by 240 per cent.
The video, which has racked up 150 likes saw one viewer ask him if he'd got his hands on one. The TikTok user replied: "Sadly not."
