This year’s EthCC is special as Brussels hosts thousands of developers from all over the world. As EthCC conference week approaches, SEC litigation continues, global regulation and how to carve out a clear path for Web3 are in the spotlight. Despite the occasional heavy rain, Brussels is still a great host city with beautiful natural scenery, high urban density, and events, restaurants, and bars all within a few minutes' walk.

The Ethereum ecosystem has come a long way since we released EthCC Recap in 2023. However, more needs to be done to realize the vision for the future. While discussions about regulation were not at the top of the conference agenda, there were many exciting topics discussed: including identity, L2 security, user privacy, better user experiences, and the power and threats of AI.

Here are five takeaways from EthCC 2024. Hopefully by this time next year we'll have made enough progress in these areas to keep Web3 builders motivated and encourage new adopters.

1.Web3 UXStill not great, but a lot of progress has been made

In the last EthCC, most of the discussions focused on improving Web3 UX to better guide users. In fact, Vitalik’s talk was titled “The History of Account Abstraction,” in which he stated that account abstraction will drive Ethereum’s next wave of mass user adoption. The focus is different this year as we have made some progress in this area with various teams launching their own smart contract account products.

A key highlight is the release of a new toolkit by Consensys via the Red Balloon Challenge: an alpha version of the MetaMask Delegation Toolkit, which allows users to enter Web3 games without using wallet extensions or apps, mnemonic words, or paying gas fees.

This shift tells us that we have moved from just talking about Web3 UX improvements to major players building innovative solutions to solve this problem, with teams like Coinbase, ZeroDev, Privy and more building and launching their own intelligence Contract account products.

2.More consumers of dapps are the next key requirement driving web3adoption

If you read last year’s EthCC summary, you’ll see that this is a recurring theme Theme of. Unfortunately, unlike the obvious advancements in Web3 UX, we have yet to see progress in this area. As we all know, if Web3 wants to attract the next billion users, it must have sufficiently attractive consumer dapps. Many people debate why this problem still exists.

Some believe that the root of the problem is that funds are flowing mainly to infrastructure builders rather than consumer dapps, as the latter are likely to exit faster. Others believe that a lack of regulatory transparency is causing dapp developers to turn to infrastructure.

No matter what, Consensys is committed to solving these problems. This is reflected in our litigation with the U.S. SEC, aiming to obtain greater regulatory transparency, and our Scale program, which is also actively seeking and funding ecosystem builders.

3.In order to improve the security and transparency of L2, collaboration between teams needs to be strengthened

It is no longer news that L2 rollup is the future of Ethereum scaling. While we’ve seen a lot of innovation around L2s, especially in zero-knowledge rollups, discussions about how to make proof systems more transparent was a common theme throughout the week.

The meeting also specifically emphasized the need for the Optimistic Rollup team to strengthen cooperation to improve the fraud prevention mechanism. Developers agree that existing solutions are problematic and vulnerable to Sybil attacks that undermine the security, settlement speed and decentralization of anti-fraud systems. This is an important theme at this year's EthCC, especially among blockchain security experts.

4.AI will open up a new dimension of blockchaindapp

Another key point is that the combination of AI and blockchain has huge potential to unlock new possibilities for dapps . Deep learning models excel at processing large amounts of data to identify patterns, make predictions, and enable decision-making processes by leveraging neural networks that mimic the cognitive processes of the human brain. Combined with the transparent, decentralized and censorship-resistant economic settlement layer of the blockchain network, this combination will enable immutable data storage and trust-minimized digital interactions.
