Blockchain interoperability is one of the key issues with the technology currently. Without various blockchain networks being able to integrate and work together, blockchain applications are limited to only their native chains. This significantly reduces the potential for innovation in the space.

Currently, one of the main problems with blockchain technology is a lack of interoperability. Without the ability for different blockchain networks to integrate and operate together, blockchain applications are limited to their native chains. This potential for innovation in the space is greatly diminished.

One project that is realizing the potential for cross-chain applications is ZetaChain, a network that aims to unite different chains. Its latest upgrade significantly improves interoperability between different blockchains and aims to make “Universal Apps” a reality.

Building Apps Across Chains Becomes Easier

Applications that can run on any blockchain have so far been a dream. However, on Thursday, July 18, ZetaChain announced major upgrades that will specifically enhance its “universal apps.” These are smart contracts that can interact with any blockchain. The Gateway and Localnet upgrades are aimed at making cross-chain apps a reality.

The new Gateway upgrade provides a single interface (API) for developers to interact with different blockchains. Instead of managing each blockchain connection individually, Gateway channels them all through a central hub, making them much easier for developers to manage.

Developers will also appreciate Localnet, a new development environment that speeds up app creation and testing, allowing developers to build cross-chain apps more quickly. The environment mimics the experience of operating on a single chain, even though the apps are designed to operate across multiple blockchains. Both of these enhancements improve the functionality of Universal Apps on ZetaChain.

The Power of Universal Apps

Universal Apps on the ZetaChain network allow users to send and receive tokens, messages, and contract calls across different blockchains. Essentially, they enable complex multi-step transactions to be executed in a single step.

The main selling point of Universal Apps is an improved user experience. They allow users to interact with multiple chains in a single step, making cross-chain interactions much simpler.

For example, a Bitcoin user can use a Universal App to send USDC to someone on the Ethereum blockchain without having to interact with both chains. Similarly, an Ethereum user can purchase an NFT on the ZetaChain network and send it to their Binance Smart Chain account in a single step.

This approach presents numerous challenges, including scalability, centralization, and security issues. However, if ZetaChain can demonstrate solutions to these problems, it will advance blockchain interoperability.

Why This Matters

By simplifying complex cross-chain operations and providing a unified development environment, ZetaChain is paving the way for more accessible and efficient blockchain applications.
