Canada’s Underdog Status Fails Drake’s Bitcoin Bet

Aubrey Drake Graham, better known by his stage name Drake, is a Canadian actor and musician who often splashes out large sums on highly visible sporting events. Earlier this week, he bet $300,000 in Bitcoin (BTC) on his native country’s semifinal victory over Argentina in the Copa America, Decrypt reported.

Being the massive underdogs that they were, Canada had odds of 9.60 to claim the win, which would have seen Drake net over $2.5 million in the leading cryptocurrency.

However, as was somewhat expected, Argentina (the current world champions) came out on top with a score of 2-0, with the second goal coming from captain Lionel Messi after the rapper challenged him.

This marks another high-profile loss for Drake, who has a habit of betting large amounts on sporting events, usually to the tune of seven figures, according to the report.

As previously reported by CryptoPotato, this is not the first time the singer has lost a substantial amount of money after placing bets on similar events. Just one month ago, he bet half a million dollars in Bitcoin on the Dallas Mavericks beating the Boston Celtics in the NBA championship.

Despite his best efforts, the Celtics went on to claim their 18th league championship title with a final score of 106-88.

From NBA to MMA: Drake’s String of Bitcoin Betting Losses

Earlier in 2024, Drake bet $700,000 in Bitcoin on a mixed martial arts bout, anticipating a victory for Sean Strickland over Dricus du Plessis, which would have seen him net a projected profit of over $650,000 in BTC. However, a split decision by the judges saw the fighter lose the match.

Two years ago, in the Spanish Grand Prix, he placed a bet of 234,000 Bitcoins on Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to come in first place, but Max Verstappen ended up winning the race instead. He also bet $600,000 in crypto on FC Barcelona to emerge victorious in their derby match against Real Madrid, but the encounter, dubbed “El Classico,” saw the Catalan team come out on the losing end.

‘The Drake Curse’ Continues to Haunt His Bets

His string of betting losses has led to the coining of the term “The Drake curse,” which relates to a superstition that the team or athlete he publicly supports will perform poorly.
