Sam Altman's Worldcoin Project Now Open to Developers

Sam Altman's cryptocurrency venture is now allowing developers to access the project for the first time.

The blockchain project, which aims to combine cryptocurrency wallets with a worldwide ID system, announced on July 9 that developers would now be able to preview the World Chain—the infrastructure created to spread the use of the Worldcoin currency.

Worldcoin is produced by Tools for Humanity, which was founded by Altman in 2019. Altman remains chair of the organization, with long-time colleague Alex Blania serving as CEO.

In a statement, Tools for Humanity said that the growth of the Worldcoin project was "in support of all humanity," and that a limited number of developers would be able to access the World Chain.

"The launch of the World Chain developer preview provides a unique opportunity for developers around the world to reach more than 10 million people across 160 countries who are using compatible wallets, starting with World App, built by project contributor Tools for Humanity," the statement said.

Worldcoin has said that over 10 million people have already made their unique IDs and compatible wallets, with over 100 million transactions having been made. Worldcoin is secured against Ethereum, one of the more well-known cryptocurrencies. It is currently in use in more than 30 countries around the world.

Worldcoin has said that on their current timeline, there will be a public launch of the project later this year. The preview release gives developers a chance to familiarize themselves with the World Chain ahead of the official launch.

What is the Worldcoin Project?

Worldcoin is an eyeball-scanning "proof of personhood" initiative, combined with a blockchain-based financial network, that asks users to scan their irises using The Orb, a biometric imaging device that provides access to the network. The scan acts as a proof of humanity.

Worldcoin users receive a digital ID along with a cryptocurrency token, as well as a way to make payments using that token. Altman's motivation for the project began with his fear that advancements in AI are making it increasingly difficult to tell whether a piece of digital content was made by humans rather than a bot or algorithm, as intelligence is becoming less reliable as a way of making distinctions between humans and bots or programs.

Altman has previously stated that he wants the project to put proof of humanity at the centre of AI systems, saying last year on X, formerly Twitter: "I'm hopeful worldcoin can contribute to conversations about how we share access, benefits, and governance of future AI systems."
