The Tomah VA Medical Center honored veterans at their first centenarian celebration on Thursday, celebrating veterans over 100 years of age.

“We had veterans who’ve turned 100 up to 107 that we recognize today. Each recipients received a coin and a letter from the secretary of VA. Some others received a Quilt of Valor Award as well,” says Tomah VA Center Development and Civic Engagement Chief Jennifer Conzemius.

One of the veterans was Henry Devine, who will be turning 103 on Sunday.

“I thought it was a good idea. I think most of the fellas are about the same as me. We’re people who appreciate what they do for them,” says Devine.

Devine says he was grateful the he and his fellow veterans are still receiving recognition even after all these years.

“They treat you excellent most of the way. I’ve met quite a few people in my life and I’ve gotten along great with all of them,” says Devine.

The Tomah VA says they have plans to celebrate more veterans in the future.

“We have roughly 20 more to celebrate and recognize, just in 2024, that have already hit that milestone or will hit that milestone this year. They’re the greatest generation. We want to take the time to recognize them,” says Conzemius.

The Tomah VA adds any family or organization that’s aware of a veteran turning 100, or have already hit that milestone can reach out to the Center’s office to make sure that they are recognized.

The Tomah VA adds since the VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement has been coordinating these celebrations to honor veteran centenarians, they have recognized 360 of them across the country.
