Bat tribal support has arrived in MTG's animal-only Bloomburrow set, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller shows that the creature type will bring the classic Orzhov lifegain strategy back to prominence.

Bloomburrow features several animal factions, each with a fantasy role to play, including warrior Mice and the ever-popular Frog subtype among MTG players, which are known for their powerful enters-the-battlefield (ETB) abilities.

Zoraline gives players a taste of how Bat creatures will play in the set, and it looks like the classic Orzhov strategies are getting a boost.

Zoraline is a legendary Bat Cleric creature that can be cast for 1WB. The 3/3 creature comes equipped with flying and vigilance, making it a strong combat commander in the early game that can slowly whittle down an opponent's life total.

While many Orzhov lifegain strategies, such as the vampires from the plane of Ixalan, rely on the lifelink ability, Zoraline takes a different approach to raising your life total through combat.

Instead of gaining life equal to the amount of damage you deal, this commander doesn't require you to break through an opponent's defenses, as its lifegain effect is tied to an attack trigger. Whenever a Bat creature you control attacks, you gain 1 life.

If Bats can make use of Bloomburrow's Offspring mechanic or any of MTG's white-mana token doublers, the archetype will be able to rack up a huge life total by repeatedly throwing weak creatures at opponents.

But Zoraline offers more than just lifegain, giving plenty of incentive to attack as often as possible with the aggressive Orzhov commander.

Whenever the creature enters the battlefield or attacks, you may pay a cost of WB and 2 life. If you do, Zoraline can return a nonland permanent with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

While this is a cheap and flexible recursion effect, be warned that the permanent returned comes with a Finality counter, so it's best to choose a card that will have the biggest impact for the turn that it's on the battlefield.

Alongside the evasive Frogs with their ETB triggers, Bats are shaping up to be one of the more exciting creature types in Bloomburrow, and we'll be digging deep into the others as spoiler season continues.
