The Celo Foundation is thrilled to announce the successful launch of the Dango Layer-2 testnet, marking a significant milestone in cLabs’ efforts to integrate Celo’s blockchain with Ethereum. The launch invites developers to start testing the updated code on this new fork of the Alfajores testnet.
The Celo Foundation is excited to announce the launch of the Dango Layer-2 testnet, a crucial step in cLabs' efforts to integrate Celo’s blockchain with Ethereum. This launch invites developers to begin testing the updated code on a new fork of the Alfajores testnet.
This Dango testnet, initially proposed during EthCC 2023, will enable developers to smoothly transition their projects to an updated blockchain iteration, meticulously designed to facilitate fast and low-cost global payments. Notably, the launch preserves all historical data from the Alfajores testnet, encompassing smart contracts, accounts, and balances.
Constructed upon Optimism’s OP Stack, Dango seamlessly combines the strengths of Celo Layer-1 with a highly scalable and interoperable blockchain framework. Backed by the Eigen Foundation and the community with EigenDA as a data availability layer, Dango maintains minimal transaction fees. This Layer-2 architecture aims to achieve lower transaction costs and a 50% enhancement in throughput, reducing block time from 5 seconds to 2 seconds.
Several key features define Dango Layer-2. It bridges WETH and ERC-20 tokens for seamless transfers between Ethereum and Celo and maintains 1-block finality for swift and secure transactions. Additionally, it supports CELO token duality, enabling interaction with CELO natively or via the ERC20 interface. Fee abstraction allows multiple ERC-20 tokens to be used as gas currencies, including Celo-native $USDT and $USDC. SocialConnect facilitates sending money to phone numbers, email addresses, or other social identifiers.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Next Steps for Celo Layer-2 Mainnet Launch
With the launch of Dango, infrastructure providers are now upgrading their Layer-2 node code. Once all key providers have updated to support the new design, Alfajores will be upgraded without creating a new fork, allowing developers to test their end-user dApps without impacting user-facing applications.
This development, completed ahead of the summer 2024 schedule, marks a significant step towards the highly anticipated Celo Layer-2 mainnet launch in early winter 2024. The Celo Foundation and cLabs are dedicated to advancing innovation and bolstering the blockchain ecosystem, ensuring a seamless transition and robust growth for both developers and users.
