The Worldcoin Foundation has announced the release of the developer preview for World Chain, its forthcoming Layer 2 network, marking a major advancement in the blockchain space.
Worldcoin Foundation has announced the release of the developer preview for World Chain, its upcoming Layer 2 network, marking a major advancement in the blockchain space.
This launch serves as a pivotal moment for the organization behind the iris-scanning crypto project Worldcoin (WLD), as it prepares to scale its operations and enhance the digital identity system it aims to establish globally.
With the opening of the World Chain developer preview, developers now have limited access to explore, build, and test the new platform. During this critical preview phase, developers can set up their deployments to prepare for the anticipated mainnet launch later this summer.
This will allow Worldcoin to shift its over 10 million World App users from OP Mainnet to World Chain. Being permissionless, open-source, and community-governed, World Chain embodies the fundamental principles of decentralized technology.
Partners such as Alchemy, Safe, and Elliptic support World Chain by providing infrastructure and development tools. More node providers, analytics firms, wallet infrastructure providers, block explorers, and bridges will be announced soon, according to the Worldcoin Foundation.
Initially launched in April, World Chain is secured by Ethereum and forms part of the Superchain network of Layer 2s built with the OP Stack. This Layer 2 network is being formally introduced by the Worldcoin Foundation. It is notably built and supported by Tools for Humanity, which was co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
“This project joins the Superchain and advances the OP Stack while contributing to the Optimism Collective,” said Ryan Wyatt, Chief Growth Officer at Optimism Unlimited.
“The World Chain developer preview empowers Worldcoin builders to leverage the OP Stack for ambitious applications, furthering the Superchain's impact.”
Since launching in July 2023, Worldcoin transactions have come to comprise over 50% of the activity on OP Mainnet, marking a significant presence among Layer 2 networks.
Driven by the challenges of scalability, the Worldcoin Foundation is shifting to World Chain, aiming to double the processing capacity compared to OP Mainnet. Plans include utilizing Reth from Paradigm for enhanced performance.
Worldcoin aims to create a system that differentiates between human and non-human actors, assigning World IDs that are verified by iris scans. The Worldcoin project aims to provide individuals with World IDs once they can use an iris scan to verify their identity as humans. As new members, they are rewarded with WLD tokens, a cryptocurrency.
The mainnet launch of World Chain is highly anticipated, as it is expected to yield significant benefits for the blockchain community. This developer preview is essential to shape decentralized apps and establish new benchmarks for scalability, performance, and digital identity verification for a more secure digital future.
