As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, two Layer-2 Ethereum solutions for scaling, Arbitrum (ARB) and Optimism (OP), have seen substantial variations in their transaction activities and financial performances so far this year. Both networks have witnessed a decline in their Total Value Locked (TVL) and the performance of their native tokens, despite a surge in transaction traffic within their ecosystems.
According to data from IntoTheBlock, Arbitrum and Optimism usage has increased fourfold over the past twelve months. This growth was particularly significant in the second quarter following the adoption of EIP 4844. The primary goal of this proposal is to enhance Ethereum’s capacity to handle larger volumes by introducing a more efficient transaction type, resulting in lower fees and improved processing capability.
Arbitrum has experienced growth, with the number of transactions increasing from less than 1 million to a record high of 2.6 million on June 26. Meanwhile, Optimism has also seen a rise in transactions, reaching 800,000 in April and now hovering around 409,000. Despite these fluctuations, Arbitrum remains substantially more active, currently outpacing Optimism's transaction count by over 1.5 million.
However, a different picture emerges when examining the overall sustainability of these platforms in terms of their financial health, as measured by the TVL, which represents the total amount of investment occurring within the platforms' financial systems. Data from DeFiLlama shows that both Arbitrum and Optimism experienced a surge in TVL earlier this year.
