MSI: After user criticism, cheaper gaming OLEDs will also receive firmware updates - only after a potentially costly update

Monitors can now often be used with extensive setting options and come with their own firmware. A corresponding user interface can be updated as part of firmware updates, for example, and in principle new functions can also be implemented - or bugs can be fixed.

MSI confirmed in February of this yearthat (among other things) the MAG 321UPX does not offer the option of updating the firmware. An update feature is offered by the more expensive MSI MPG 321URX, which also boasts USB Type-C with PD support. The decision to exclude buyers of the cheaper MAG 321UPX from the option to update the firmware unsurprisingly led to critical reactions from the community.

MSI has now announced that the two models MAG 271QPX and MAG 321UPX will now have the option to update the firmware after all. However, this option is only possible with a specific firmware. MAG 271QPX requires at least firmware version FW.012, and version FW.015 needs to be installed on the MAG 321UPX. This is where the cat bites the tail, so to speak: Users of a lower firmware version cannot update it themselves but must contact MSI, who must carry out the update. The good news is that the monitors sold in Europe should already come with the necessary firmware ex-works.

The installation of the following updates should then be relatively simple. The corresponding firmware update must be downloaded to a PC in the form of an executable file. To start the update process, the corresponding monitor must be connected directly via DisplayPort without an adapter. It is still unclear whether relevant new functions or improvements will actually be included though.

Possible alternative: Buy the Asus ROG Strix XG32UQ from Amazon
