Supporting the CXL memory module ecosystem, JEDEC launches the JESD405-1B memory module label standard

According to news from this site on June 25, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association today released the JESD405-1B memory module label standard suitable for the CXL1.1 specification, providing standard support for standardizationCXL memory modules. CXL memory modules provide an easy way to add a large amount of memory to server systems that support the CXL specification. These memory modules usually adopt EDSFFE1.S or E3.S specifications and support hot swapping.

JEDEC stated that JESD405-1B, together with JESD317A released in 2023 (note on this site: the memory module reference basic standard applicable to CXL1.0), defines the functions of CXL memory modules and configuration, as well as the standardized content of labels on these modules. Among them, JESD317A provides detailed mechanical, electrical, pinout, power and thermal, and environmental guidelines for CXL memory modules. JESD405-1B clarifies the memory media type (such as DDR5), supported CXL specification version, capacity, connector and IO configuration that needs to be included on the CXL memory module label, as well as a QR code to identify the country of origin, simplifying inventory management.

Mian Quddus, Chairman of the JEDEC Association Board of Directors, said: JESD317A and JESD405-1B affirm JEDEC’s active support of expanding the market for CXL solutions. The documents are a collaborative effort among dozens of companies representing CXL memory solution providers and end-users. End-users can purchase CXL memory modules with confidence from multiple sources (supported by these two standards), helping to commercialize these solutions to the benefit of the entire industry.
