Developers at layer-2 network ~ZKsync~ are introducing a new concept called the "ElasticChain," which aims to seamlessly integrate multiple chains within the ~ZKsync~ ecosystem, creating the user experience of a single chain. This concept is part of a broader trend in blockchain technology focused on enhancing interoperability. The ElasticChain concept was unveiled in a blog post shared by Matter Labs, the main development firm behind ~ZKsync~, with CoinDesk. At the center of this new roadmap, dubbed ~ZKsync~ 3.0, is the recently released v24 upgrade, which is designed to transform "~ZKsync~ from a single ~ZK~ chain into an ElasticChain." Multiple chains in the ~ZKsync~ ecosystem will be interconnected by this ElasticChain, which will be concealed from users, giving them the impression of interacting with a single chain. The concept was introduced earlier this year by Polygon with their AggLayer.
The ElasticChain will have three main components, Matter Labs said. The first component includes the "Native Token Vault" and the "Shared Router," which are at the heart of the network. “These components are implemented as a series of smart contracts on Ethereum and are responsible for handling chain registrations and managing the state of the network,” the team explained. The second component is the ~ZK~ Gateway, which is a middleware that connects the Ethereum blockchain to ~ZKsync~'s ~ZK~ chains, enabling interoperability between different chains in the ~ZKsync~ ecosystem. “Together, these core components ensure that ~ZK~ chains can interact and transact with each other efficiently, inheriting the security of Ethereum and forming a network that can scale horizontally without sacrificing the core properties that make public blockchains so powerful,” Matter Labs wrote.
