Pre-Bell Market Report: Dow Jones Futures Rise; Nasdaq Futures Slip Ahead of Key Inflation Data

The Nasdaq slipped on Monday, dragged down by weakness in Nvidia and other chip stocks, while investors geared up for a key inflation print this week that could further shape bets over the timing and quantum of rate cuts.

Major U.S. stock indexes opened mixed on Monday, with the Dow set to extend gains for a fifth straight session, as investors awaited key inflation data this week and prepared for a slew of corporate earnings.

The Nasdaq slipped, dragged down by weakness in Nvidia and other chip stocks.

At 11:32 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJI rose 391.08 points, or 0.99%, to 39,536.89. The S&P 500 SPX gained 14.86 points, or 0.27%, to 5,479.62, while the Nasdaq Composite IXIC fell 54.66 points, or 0.31%, to 17,635.091.

Among the major S&P 500 sectors, Energy rose the most, tracking a gain in crude prices, while Information Technology slipped the most.

The CBOE volatility index, also known as Wall Street's fear gauge, fell 0.2 points to 19.08.

Among the top gainers on the S&P 500 were Packaging Corporation of America (PKG.N) and Schlumberger N.V. (SLB.N), both up 3.5%, followed by APA Corp (APA.O) with a 3.5% gain.

ResMed (RMD.N) fell the most, down 10.5%, after a failed sleep apnea trial for its weight-loss drug. Super Micro Computer (SMCI.O) slid 7.5% and Nvidia (NVDA.O) lost 5.6%.

Of the 1,000 S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far, 68.6% have topped analysts' estimates, according to Refinitiv data, compared to a long-term average of 62%.

Overall, 526 companies have reported positive EPS surprises, while 218 companies have reported negative surprises.

Coming up this week are earnings from Home Depot (HD.N), Walmart (WMT.N), Cisco Systems (CSCO.O), and Nvidia.

Among the top gainers on the NYSE were Ault Disruptive Technologies (ADRT.N), which soared 40.7%, and RXO (RXO.N), which gained 23.1%.

The biggest NYSE decliner was Inspire Medical Systems (INSP.N), down 14.9%.
