Hundreds of people on the Isle of Man are falling ill with an unpleasant stomach bug, causing diarrhoea and vomiting - and disrupting flights to and from the island.

Public Health Isle of Man has issued a warning to residents, saying the symptoms should pass in a few days and anyone who has been ill should stay home for 48 hours after they recover.

The illness is spreading across the island, with five members of staff in air traffic control among those affected this week, causing disruption to flights.

An airport spokesman said at the time: “Due to multiple illnesses in our ATC team, the airfield will experience a delay to opening this morning. Despite our best efforts to find coverage, we currently have five team members sick. We are doing our best to open it as soon as possible.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and delays this will cause to your flights. Thank you for your understanding.”

Public Health Isle of Man said residents should seek urgent medical attention if a baby is infected. Anyone with signs of dehydration or bloody diarrhoea should also contact a doctor.

People are being urged to wash their hands frequently in a bid to stop the spread of the illness.

It comes as people across the UK have fallen ill with E.coli food poisoning thanks to infected lettuce in sandwiches. It is not known if the cases on the Isle of Man are linked.
