Apple Intelligence will not launch in EU later this year

Like every other OEM in recent history, Apple spent a good chunk of time talking about AI at WWDC 2024. In true Apple fashion, it was called Apple Intelligence. It included some interesting new features that will debut later this year on select devices. However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports users in the EU may have to wait a bit longer before they can use it.

On top of Apple Intelligence, features such as iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing won't be available in the EU. Apple says this is due to EU's DMA (Digital Markets Act) that places numerous restrictions on the company. Enforced in 2023, it includes six major players including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft. An Apple spokesperson issued the following statement to Bloomberg:

We are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security

As a result, Apple Intelligence won't be available in 27 EU countries. Apple is yet to officially comment on the matter, but we should get an official confirmation soon. While there is a chance the said features could launch at a later point, they will require heavy modifications to comply with DMA regulations. To make matters worse, Elon Musk threatened to ban Apple devices from his company, likening Apple Intelligence to an episode of the popular dyntopian-themed TV show Black Mirror.
