Rose Romita is truly one of 100. She was honoured June 19 with a special Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) centennial coin for her 20 years of commitment and dedication to Barrie residents
Barrie resident Rose Romita was honoured June 19 with a special Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) centennial coin for her two decades of service to the community.
Romita, a former Ward 2 councillor, is being recognized by the RCAF for her commitment and dedication to Barrie residents, one of 100 Canadians to be so recognized this year.
The RCAF is giving out the coins to help celebrate 100 years since it began in nearby Canadian Forces Base Borden.
Romita was honoured for her loyalty, integrity, excellence, inclusion and for feeding countless people in need.
“The city really loves the work that you’ve done, you do, respects you,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “On Thanksgiving, when many of us are cooking for five or six or seven or eight members of their family, Rose was cooking for literally hundreds of people in the community who wouldn’t have had a Thanksgiving dinner or a Christmas dinner, Easter dinner, and just bringing the community together around that.”
She served as the Ward 2 councillor from 2014 to 2018. The ward includes downtown Barrie.
Current Coun. Sergio Morales served with her during her time on council.
“You are selfless, you spend more time helping others than you do on yourself,” he said of Romita. “Many people help, there’s not many people that can say they’ve literally given their couch multiple times, or space, and that is incredible of you.
“Yet the most important thing about your work is you inspire others to also help their community, other people who’ve the resources or the time or the emotional capacity,” Morales added. “The city of Barrie is better because of it.”
Romita said she appreciates the honour and being associated with the RCAF.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to meaningful causes throughout the charity work and I am inspired by the generosity and compassion of all those who support these efforts,” she said. “This medal not only represents my work, but also the dedication and support from the countless individuals and the contributions to the success of the charitable initiatives.
“I am reminded of the values and service and commitment and selflessness that define the spirit (of) this esteemed organization (the RCAF),” Romita added. “It is an honour to be associated with such a legacy of excellence and dedication.”
Col. Gabriel Doré, 16 Wing commander, and 16 Wing Chief Warrant Officer Geoff Rusconi were on hand to present Romita with her coin.
