A coin collector has revealed the rare 1p that could be worth over £160.

The TikTok user, who goes by the name of coincollectingwizard, shared how the 1894 predecimal penny could be valuable to collectors - but only if it is in good condition.

This particular coin is the last predecimal penny to feature Queen Victoria, and it is known as the “bun coin” due to her hairstyle.

The pre-decimal system was made up of pounds, shilling and pence , and was used before we switched over to our current currency system in February 1971.

The other side of the coin depicts the Helmed Britannia on the reverse, with the words “one penny” and the date 1894.

The TikTok user said: "The 1894 penny in extra-fine condition easily sells for over £160, so keep an eye out for this very old penny."

But as this coin is so old, you won't find it in your spare change.

One valuable coin that you'll have more chance of finding is the Kew Gardens 50p, which is highly sought-after by collectors.

This coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and features the famous Chinese Pagoda from the gardens being intertwined by a leafy climber.

This coin is rare as there are only 210,000 in circulation.

One recent eBay listing reveals how a Kew Gardens 50p sold for £147, plus £2.70 for delivery, on June 10 after attracting 19 bids.

Change checking website Coin Hunter says the average price of a circulated version of the Kew Gardens 50p is £140 - however, some have sold for higher than this.

When we searched recent eBay listings, we found one had sold for £206 in April of this year.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change, you should check the date on it first.

The Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 as part of a collection to celebrate 50 years of the 50p - and these don’t tend to fetch as much on eBay.
