When users of cross-chain interoperability protocol LayerZero go to collect their ZRO token airdrop, they will have to donate $0.10 in USDC, USDT, or ETH

LayerZero Labs CEO Defends Controversial Airdrop 'Donation' Model

LayerZero users will now have to pay a small fee to collect their ZRO airdrop. The fee, which ranges from $0.10 to $0.15 per ZRO token received, must be donated to Protocol Guild, an organization that supports Ethereum developers.

The move has sparked mixed reactions within the crypto community, with some applauding LayerZero's efforts to support Ethereum developers and others expressing concerns about the mandatory nature of the donation.

A LayerZero representative stated that the donation is completely voluntary and that users who do not wish to contribute can simply choose not to claim their airdrop tokens. However, many users have pointed out that airdrops have historically been free to collect, and that imposing a fee feels like a betrayal of the community.

“There is no forced donation, if you don’t want to donate… simply don’t claim. This is not something you own, it’s something being offered,” said Bryan Pellegrino, LayerZero Labs CEO, defending the move on X.

“proof of donation was supposed to make people stop and think for two seconds, literally, pennies of donation per and to an amazing group who actually needs the support and all of us have benefited a TON from.”

Some users have also expressed concerns about the way in which LayerZero decided to implement the donation. They argue that the project should have consulted the community before making such a decision, especially considering the fact that the airdrop is a significant event for many LayerZero users.

“The airdrop is a hot topic among LayerZero users, and many have been eagerly awaiting its arrival. In light of this, it would have been valuable to gauge user preferences and gather feedback on the donation initiative,” said one user.

“By involving the community in the decision-making process, LayerZero could have ensured that the chosen approach aligns closely with the wishes of the majority of users.”

Others, however, have defended LayerZero's decision, arguing that the project has every right to decide how they want to distribute their tokens. They also point out that the donation is relatively small and that it goes towards a worthy cause.

“Projects should be free to do whatever they want with their tokens. If they want to use them to support Ethereum developers, then more power to them,” said one user.

“The donation is also very small, so I don't see what the big deal is. People are acting like LayerZero is robbing them blind.”

Ultimately, whether or not to pay the fee to collect the ZRO airdrop is a personal decision. Users who are strongly opposed to the donation may choose to forgo claiming their tokens, while those who support Ethereum developers and want to help them may be more inclined to pay the fee.
