The R18 standard took more than three years from project establishment to freezing. It is the first version of 5G-Advanced (5G-A/5.5G).

It is reported that this year is the fifth year of 5G commercial use in my country. During the past five years, 5G technology development has experienced three standard versions: R15, R16 and R17.

Among them, R15, as the first complete version of 5G, was officially frozen in 2019. It laid the foundation of 5G technology and provided a solid foundation for subsequent evolution.

The R18 standard provides the first version of the international standard for 5G-A, which is regarded as the second half of 5G.

Compared with traditional 5G, 5G-A’s network capabilities can be improved 10 times, supporting 10 Gigabit experience, 100 billion connections, and the downlink peak value is upgraded from 1Gbps to 10Gbps. The upstream peak value increased from 0.1Gbps to 1Gbps.

It can support the network needs of application scenarios such as immersive real-time, intelligent uplink, industrial interconnection, synaesthesia integration, 100 billion IoT, and space-to-earth integration, thus opening up a broader industrial space and exploring the evolution of 6G.
