Carbon capture material innovation is transforming as artificial intelligence accelerates the materials design process. A new company just emerged from stealth mode, announcing a $30 million seed round that uses artificial intelligence to rapidly generate and evaluate a large number of novel structures to design new materials.

The startup, called CuspAI, is based in Cambridge and Amsterdam and was founded by well-known professionals in the field of artificial intelligence, including Professor Max Welling, a former Microsoft Research and Qualcomm Distinguished Scientist and Vice President, as well as those involved in Google and BASF Deep Technology Commercialization Chemist Dr. Chad Edwards. Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of Artificial Intelligence,” will serve as a board advisor.

The startup is a materials search engine platform that allows users to request specific properties of new materials on demand. Ultimately, the technology could quickly discover materials with precise functionalities.

One of the startup’s priority areas is climate change. The technology could be used to request materials that selectively bind carbon dioxide under specific conditions for use in the direct air capture and carbon capture fields.

CuspAI technology can help generate a wide range of materials, from materials that capture carbon dioxide to sustainable fuels. This approach could help the industry achieve its goal of reducing the cost of removing carbon dioxide from the air to around $100.

"Imagine a search engine that could search not just existing materials, but all molecules and materials that could possibly be created. Our AI could generate and evaluate new materials on demand... through careful process optimization and experimentation Through laboratory testing, we are able to complete the closed loop and ensure that the material is synthesized, stable and ultimately ready for production," explained Professor Max Welling, co-founder and chief AI officer of CuspAI.

Cusp is working with Meta, which is working on a project called OpenDAC to advance direct air capture. Meta's researchers will work with Cusp's team to accelerate progress in the carbon removal field. Cusp plans to support its research and development by charging businesses to use its search engine to find the materials they need.

CuspAI is taking a completely new approach to integrating efficient evaluation stacks, optimization and generative models to create high-quality, economically viable materials that previously took decades to discover. At Lightspeed, we believe The CuspAI team is leading a new era in which finding solutions to society’s major global challenges will become as simple as searching the web, and we are proud to partner with them,” said Lightspeed Venture Partners, one of CuspAI’s investors. Paul Murphy said.
