According to the latest report from Canalys, a third-party technology analysis agency, the personal computer (PC) (including desktops, notebooks and workstations) market in mainland China is expected to shrink by 1% in 2024.
Although the global market has resumed its growth trend, mainland China's shipments in the first quarter still fell by 12%, benefiting from the procurement needs of the commercial sector, especially large state-owned enterprises and local government departments, desktop PCs in 2024 Shipments are expected to perform well, with an annual growth rate of 10%.
#In the short term, consumers and private enterprises remain cautious in spending on PCs and other aspects, and notebook computer shipments are expected to decline by 5% throughout the year.
The recovery trajectory of China’s PC market is not consistent with global trends. In the first quarter of 2024, weak IT spending by leading companies led to a market downturn, and the commercial market experienced a sharp decline of 19%. The decline in shipments in the consumer market was more moderate, only 8%. Although the PC market performance is mediocre in 2024, with the continued development of nationalized procurement, the market performance is expected to be stronger in 2025, and PC shipments are expected to achieve 12% growth.
#AI not only promotes the development of the PC market, but also becomes an important catalyst for the tablet market. Although notebook and desktop shipments fell by 13% and 11% respectively in the first quarter, the tablet market achieved 22% growth. This is thanks to the growing demand for learning tablets and the emphasis on local smartphone manufacturers’ strategy of building a multi-device ecosystem.
Huawei continues to update its tablet product portfolio, launching low-end products of the MatePad SE series and high-end products of the MatePad Pro series. Other manufacturers have successively launched new devices and efficiency-improving AI applications (such as recording, translation and note-taking apps) to empower tablets. The education market is also a hotbed of competition and innovation. Manufacturers such as iFlytek and Xueersi are committed to the development of AI learning models and reach a large number of students through their tablets.
