Comments and messages are a great way for webmasters to build community and readership. Annoyingly, the comment and message features are often abused by spammers or other malicious actors, many of whom use scripts or other software to generate and post spam comments.

Too many such spam messages not only affect the appearance, but in most cases will have a negative impact on your website’s search engine ranking! This also makes many webmasters restrict the posting of URL hyperlinks in comments or messages, but this makes it impossible to reply to some content that really needs link guidance.

Now, we can use the "nofollow" tag. A few years ago, major search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN introduced "nofollow", and this attribute has been widely adopted. Any links using the rel="nofollow" attribute will not be used to calculate PageRank or determine the relevance of your page to the user's query.

For example, if a comment spammer includes a link like this in your comment:

This is A nice website! It will convert to:

This is a great site! This new link will not be taken into account when calculating PageRank.

In this way, you can avoid problems when passing PageRank. Although spam comments and messages cannot be avoided, meaningful direct links can still be published normally!

Many blogging sites (e.g. Blogger) automatically add this attribute to all posted comments by default.
