Responsive Web Design - Grid View

What is Grid View?

Many web pages are designed based on grid , which means that the web page is laid out in columns.

Using grid view helps us design web pages. This makes it easier to add elements to web pages.

Responsive grid views are typically 12 columns, 100% width, and automatically scale when the browser window is resized.

Create a responsive grid view

Next we create a responsive grid view.

First make sure that all HTML elements have the box-sizing attribute set to border-box.

Make sure the margins and borders are included between the width and height of the element.

Add the following code:

* {
    box-sizing: border-box;
}

To view more box-sizing content, please click: CSS3 box-sizing attribute.

The following example demonstrates a simple responsive web page, containing two columns:

Example

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>php中文网</title>
<style>
* {
    box-sizing: border-box;
}
.header {
    border: 1px solid red;
    padding: 15px;
}
.menu {
    width: 25%;
    float: left;
    padding: 15px;
    border: 1px solid red;
}
.main {
    width: 75%;
    float: left;
    padding: 15px;
    border: 1px solid red;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>

<div class="header">
<h1>Chania</h1>
</div>

<div class="menu">
<ul>
<li>The Flight</li>
<li>The City</li>
<li>The Island</li>
<li>The Food</li>
</ul>
</div>

<div class="main">
<h1>The City</h1>
<p>Chania is the capital of the Chania region on the island of Crete. The city can be divided in two parts, the old town and the modern city.</p>
<p>Resize the browser window to see how the content respond to the resizing.</p>
</div>

</body>
</html>

The above example contains two columns.

The 12-column grid system allows for better control of responsive web pages.

First we can calculate the percentage of each column: 100% / 12 columns = 8.33%.

Specify class in each column, class="col-" is used to define how many spans each column has:

Example

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>php 中文网</title>
<style>
* {
    box-sizing: border-box;
}
.header {
    border: 1px solid red;
    padding: 15px;
}
.row:after {
    content: "";
    clear: both;
    display: block;
}
[class*="col-"] {
    float: left;
    padding: 15px;
    border: 1px solid red;
}
.col-1 {width: 8.33%;}
.col-2 {width: 16.66%;}
.col-3 {width: 25%;}
.col-4 {width: 33.33%;}
.col-5 {width: 41.66%;}
.col-6 {width: 50%;}
.col-7 {width: 58.33%;}
.col-8 {width: 66.66%;}
.col-9 {width: 75%;}
.col-10 {width: 83.33%;}
.col-11 {width: 91.66%;}
.col-12 {width: 100%;}
</style>
</head>
<body>

<div class="header">
<h1>Chania</h1>
</div>

<div class="row">

<div class="col-3">
<ul>
<li>The Flight</li>
<li>The City</li>
<li>The Island</li>
<li>The Food</li>
</ul>
</div>

<div class="col-9">
<h1>The City</h1>
<p>Chania is the capital of the Chania region on the island of Crete. The city can be divided in two parts, the old town and the modern city.</p>
<p>Resize the browser window to see how the content respond to the resizing.</p>
</div>

</div>
</body>

All columns float to the left, and the spacing (padding) is 15px:

CSS:

[class*="col-"] {
float: left ;
padding: 15px;
border: 1px solid red;
}

Use <div> to wrap each line. The total number of columns should add up to 12:

<div class="row" >
<div class="col-3"> ...</div>
<div class= "col-9">...</div>
</div>

The row in the column floats left and adds a clear float:

CSS:

.row:after {
content: "";
clear: both;
display: block;
}

We can add some styles and colors, Make it look better:
